Chicken with feathers. My & @matthewlud's Eulalie, 10 months old. In honor of her 10 months I give you a story written by one of my best friends and also, incidentally, my "wasband", @ericcharlespeterson. Link in profile. It's the sorry of the relationship he has formed with Eula, and, by necessity, the story of, as he puts it our "nightmarriage" (truth) and our resultant (albeit hard earned) "post apocalyptic unicorn daydream" of a surviving friendship. It moved me to tears. Life is peculiar. And there can be such redemption on the other side of the most ill advised decisions. Bonus footage = video of Eula and a Polaroid from our ridiculous after party (that prominently featured PBR and fried chicken). I think I'm smoking a cigarette in sunglasses in of doors at well past midnight. Oh youth. The fact that we are able to all be friends is due in no small part to my awesome husband, @matthewlud who has welcomed my friend back into our lives without hesitation. Life is rife with pain, nature of the game, but when the worst you and another person can do to one another can be mutually forgiven it's pretty freaking amazing. It's not all bad. Follow @ericcharlespeterson for on point photography and writing and click the link in profile for a chapter of my life told better than I could tell it. eulaliewilla babyaulait

Pink salad on repeat because millennial. 🙋🏻 Ok, I'm technically on the razor edge, almost of Gen X but not quite. I'll be 34 in a couple of weeks or something. Born 1983, the year Return of the Jedi came out, which matters. A lot of people ask me how I got started blogging—honestly as long as I've had internet access I've had some sort of website. My first was when I was 13 years old. I taught myself HTML and made—you guessed it—a Star Wars fan page. This was back when you could basically know everyone else in the online Star Wars community in an HTML chat room on a platform called "Chatterbox". Back when you never used your real name because you'd ostensibly get yourself into a "To Catch a Predator" scenario and asked a/s/l in chat rooms. I was also a long time WoW player, since vanilla. It sounds weird to say, but the internet has been home for a long time. Maybe it's because I'm an introvert and most articulate when I can write. Or just because I'm a nerd. But either way, thanks internet. You're alright. Here's a pink salad. ✌🏻

The Paris I love—people strewn like so many spent cigarettes sur le pavé along the banks of the Seine. A lens flare dream where I'm 17 and not broken or hurt or wise and I have nothing to lose. Where I'm cheap and silly, and I think every path I see might be the one for me, every back alley narrative prismatic. Now I can't even be bothered to look down most paths. I don't know if I'm any wiser or if exhaustion and boredom masquerade as wisdom. I don't even know if I'm exhausted or bored. A little, but not entirely. I'm less romantic, more practical. But still hopeless. And sometimes I can see my own face on a girl laid out on the sidewalk in a short skirt, smoking cigarettes as if they weren't vile and drinking cheap wine with no concept of time or responsibility or holding on to anything other than now. I don't miss it. I miss it. Being a mother and wife, being a woman, is interesting. But being a girl is in its own way too what with all of its knicks and bruises. To be the same thing ones whole life would be boring. And so we change and barely notice our own ghost on the bench next to us. As it should be. Because this is time, and it is golden. localmilkparis theartofslowliving

Hitting the evening streets here in Paris for magic hour photos and to see where the night takes me. Likely to oysters on the half shell, if I had to guess. Current mood, a little scribbled and a little electric. Kinda blue. Mixed states, so they say. Feeling a phantom limb. Probably been listening to too much pop music. Nothing a little coral lipstick and the Seine at night can't cure. ✨✨✨localmilkparis prettycitiesparis seemyparis

Octopus salad with fresh fennel flowers foraged by chef @studio_neon at last years Formentera Retreat co-hosted with @carolina_ferrer_. We have added just a couple of extra spots to our retreat here this coming September! Register via the link in profile to get yours today! We'll be sailing, painting, picnicking, recharging on world class beaches, doing yoga each morning, and all the while learning photography & the art of visual storytelling. And, just as importantly, our retreats focus on discussions about slow living & making the life you dream about a reality. We believe that a life well lived exists far beyond the inbox and that there is a way for creatives to make a great living doing what they love without hectic hustle of perpetual busyness. Our philosophy of slow living is a practical one: it's about less but better in all things, being empowered to say no, setting boundaries, knowing when to say yes, what to charge, and determining what to keep and what to let go of in your business and life. We may not be able to "have it all" but I believe there's more than enough time for what matters. The rest we can leave behind, and that's where we find the space to live slow. Not sure if it's for you after reading the event page and our FAQ? Drop us a line and let's have a chat to see if it's a good fit! localmilkretreat theartofslowliving

I've spent the last couple of days immersed in the world of @krugchampagne at their KrugWorldFestival in the Champagne region of France. I had the pleasure of experiencing their world first hand starting with the story of founder Joseph Krug's journey shared by his great-great-grandson @krugoli, to a tour of the cellars (they were also, inspiringly, used for everything from church to school during the Second World War), to a Wild Rosé lunch in the forest beneath the canopy, to an evening of truly unforgettable music by @liannelahavas and @slyjohnson_off. Music has been an integral part of the brand from Joseph Krug's salon to current CEO Maggie's passion for the way in which music and taste experience intertwine and influence one another. It is so refreshing that a prestigious brand like Krug keeps things simple and reminds us that the essence of champagne is purely pleasure. Much love & thanks to @krugchampagne for welcoming me into their family, sharing their passion, and for such a beautiful experience.

I'm a useless pile of lady shaped linen dreaming of white boats and blue seas. T-minus 11 days until sailing in Greece. For the first half of July, if you need me, I'll be bobbing somewhere in the Aegean. Until then...moving as little as possible and turning my oven on for no wo/man. Cold soup. Salad. Smoothies. Juice. Fresh fruit. And damn I need to buy a popsicle mold like yesterday...where does a lady get a popsicle mold (traditional paleta shape pls!) in Paris? 🤔 localmilkparis theartofslowliving

Comment from Beth Kirby:

A snapshot of last week's galavanting around Paris with these two, @ellemayleckenby & @1924us. @matthewlud and I have been talking a lot about friendship vs. community, about the differences between the two as well as their overlap. Since relocating (a little over two short weeks) I've had more casual dinner parties, more coffee dates, and more social interactions than I'd have in a year in Chattanooga (truly not that hyperbolic...) I realized that not only did we choose to nest somewhere that inspires us both but that we've also moved closer to our community. We live in a time when communities can be stitched out of digital proximity and not just geographical. While my work community is largely digital, I'm one of those people that prefers face to face interactions. I'm notoriously bad at keeping in touch. I don't do email or text or Facebook. I do in the flesh. I call myself a "cactus friend" because I don't need much "water" other than meaningful, face to face hangs, however infrequently. Here in Paris, finally, that digital community is fleshing itself out, becoming incarnate. Between the locals we've gotten to meet and the international friends that are forever passing through, this feels like the perfect place to practice my love language: hospitality. Our communities are whatever we make of them, the only thing required to be a part of one is that you participate. Communities are about, for me, a common goal. Friendship is about interests, values, humor in common. And best friendship is about some ineffable, inexorable tie with another person that needs no tending, that simply is. So while Instagram is great for making introductions, relationships still happen in real life and this bubble will never, could never, has never been a substitute for late nights, long walks, records spinning, dirty plates, and all that is convivial in the world. localmilkparis theartofslowliving slowfriendship

A simple gathering. We had some friends— @belleannee & her husband, @jelliottblake, and @rawbgold—over for an informal supper of bits from the market—the juiciest dates, assorted fromages, fresh summer fruits, grilled artichokes, and fennel salami. For supper we had my endive & artichoke salad with fresh goat cheese and mint, and cold white asparagus & melon soup. It was the first time I'd made the soup, so it has some tweaking left to do, but I was pretty happy with the result. The melon brings out the sweetness of the artichoke and the soup is creamy from bread & rich from almonds and olive oil. No cooking required. My favorite type of summer soup. Groceries. Borlotti beans, green almonds, and wild asparagus until I can't find them anymore. And cheese. Always. Just bought a tripod for our place here in Paris today for phone and camera. Me a tripod! It's a relatively well known fact that I have about zero patience for tripods. But I'm super inspired by movement in the form of short form video, moving stills, animation, and boomerangs. They're just fun and don't have all the fuss of long form cinematic video (love that too but not for me right now). So! What are your favorite in phone apps for adding animation to stills and video, video editing and post production, and all things that move? It's a brace new world for me. I know how to use photoshop & flixel to create cinemagraphs but that's it. And I dig Lumyer but I don't like that it can only do squares...this girl wants to be able to do 4x5 vertical video and animation. Halp! theartofslowliving chasinglight harshlight

Comment from Beth Kirby:

Things that I remind myself of: instagram is not a bar for reality. You don't have to be busy to be good, hard working, or important. Maybe even quite the opposite. Gritty and different are good even when you're old and too tired and boring for it (meeeee). What you like and what is good aren't necessarily the same things and that's ok! What is good? Who knows! But some things are and aren't and don't be afraid to say so, even if you're wrong. Sex is good for real relationships, make love. Money exists, spend less or save more or give more or make more. Or all of the above. If you really can't effect it, it's not your fault. This system isn't fair. Don't feel good for pretending it's a non-reality. Don't feel bad for not having it or better for having it. Be honest with yourself. Kick ass. Don't take names, that's boring. Be resplendent. On fire. Unapologetically you. Strategize. Do the literal math. Love.

Today @matthewlud and I took Eulalie to Parc Buttes-Chaumont. We strolled, sat on a blanket eating roast chou-flour out of a brown paper bag from Miznon. Moments like these are the reason I moved to Paris. You can't help but slow down here. Since Japan I've been reevaluating both my business model and my life model, percolating on how I spend both my money and my time. They are not unrelated. I'm forming a picture of what I want to say yes to, a strategy & commitment to saying no to the rest, and rediscovering the why behind everything I do. I've found that my "why" is simple. My business exists to create beautiful food on the table & beautiful experiences in the world and empower others to live slow while making a living and an impact. My personal why is even simpler: to live in the present enjoying the people and world around me. What's your why? theartofslowliving

A new kettle love affair with this @Alessi_official classic & testing herbal infusions for the book back in my Tennessee kitchen. Actually this kettle isn't really a new love affair—this is the kettle I grew up with. My parents always had this one and do to this day—it's what I grew up with. It's a familiar piece of nostalgia that makes me happy every time I use it. Matt gave it to me for our Paris apartment, and since I have a tendency to constantly boil over my kettles this one is perfect because it has a proper little bird whistle so I know when my water is ready. Tip for brewing pour over coffee, herbal infusions, and teas: wait 5-7 minutes after the water boils to pour it because water that is too hot can make your drink bitter! Alessi GiftAlessi partner

We will be exploring the beautiful landscape of the islands while learning photography as well as how to create cinemagraphs! In addition to the visual storytelling we will be focusing on how creatives can turn their passion into a thriving business that allows them to make a living doing what they love and how to be the master of your time & live slow without sacrificing the things that really matter *or* success in business. Sunday vibes & morning light at home. Today I made a list, not my usual to do list but rather a list of what I would do if there were no to do's. Go to the park, read, cook for no reason other than to eat, explore the city, and spend time just hanging out with my daughter and @matthewlud. It was a good exercise in remembering what that to do list is even for. And a good reminder that those things are just as important and deserve to be scheduled and time blocked just like the to do list. The to do list May never go away, but it can wait. It can all wait. We're taking a slow Sunday to meet up with new friends (👋🏻 @rawbgold & @lostncheeseland!), visit our favorite cafes, and enjoy each other's company and this beautiful (albeit hot!) day in Paris. localmilkparis theartofslowliving follow along on IGstories!
